Past Continous Tense

Past continuous tense atau past progressive tense adalah suatu bentuk kata kerja yang digunakan untuk menyatakan bahwa suatu aksi sedang terjadi pada waktu tertentu di masa lampau. Aksi tersebut telah dimulai tapi belum selesai pada saat itu.

Fungsi Past Continous Tense

1.  Menunjukkan pekerjaan yang sedang terjadi pada masa lampau.
Contoh:

o     I am sorry Jane, yesterday I could not help you because I was washing my car.
(Maaf Jane, aku tidak bisa menolongmu kemarin, soalnya aku lagi nyuci mobilku).

o     She was crying in my shoulder so I could not go any where.
(Dia menangis di pundakku jadi aku tidak bisa pergi kemana-mana)

2.  Menunjukkan dua buah aktifitas yang sedang terjadi bersama-sama di masa lampau.
Contoh:

o     The fire was burning my house when my mother was cooking last night.
(Ayahku sedang mandi ketika mamaku sedang masak kemarin malam)

o     John was operating his computer when I was watching a movie.
(John sedang mengoperasikan komputer ketika aku sedang nonton film)

3.  Berfungsi untuk menunjukkan aktifitas yang sedang terjadi di masa lampau di saat kejadian lainnya menyela.
Contoh:

o     My father was taking a bath when I knocked the door
(Ayaku sedang mandi ketika aku mengetuk pintu)

o     She always interrupted me when I was delivering my speech.
(Dia selalu menyela ketika aku sedang berpidato)
